Folding a Map for the TopoCover™

The following instructions are also printed on the TopoCover™ itself.

1. Place the map face-down on a clean, flat surface and fold it in half vertically.
2. Fold the eastern and western halves over on themselves so that the map is folded vertically to one-fourth its original width.
3. Unfold the map and smooth the creases.
4. Turn the map face-down and fold it in half again, this time horizontally.
5. Fold the northern and southern halves over on themselves. The map is now folded horizontally to one-fourth its original height.
6. Unfold the map and smooth the creases.
7. Use a razor and straight-edge to cut a horizontal slit along the center crease — the slit should go from the first vertical crease to the third.
8. Gather the map up along its center vertical crease.
9. Turn the top flap forward to show the NW quadrant, and turn the bottom flap back to show the SE quadrant.
10. Gather the map up along its center horizontal crease.
11. Turn the top flap down to show the NW quadrant of the map. Insert the upper-left corner into the upper-left pocket of the TopoCover™.
12. Turn the right flap forward to show the NE quadrant of the map. Insert the upper-right corner into the upper-right pocket of the TopoCover™.
13. Turn the bottom flap up to show the SE quadrant of the map. Insert the lower-right corner into the lower-right pocket of the TopoCover™.
14. Turn the left flap back to show the SW quadrant of the map. Insert the lower-left corner into the lower-left pocket of the TopoCover™.

The TopoCover™ allows you to flip easily from one quadrant to another without unfolding and refolding your map, and it closes to store your map at one-sixteenth its original size.

Close the TopoCover™ first over the long vertical axis like a book, and then down the shorter horizontal axis like a flip-pad. To label your TopoCover™, write the map’s name on the back of a business card and slide it into the window on the front cover.
